Enjoy your Labor Day Raiders

Wreck Em Tech...now let's eat.

Passive Aggessor's Texas Tech Predictions

Well I think its Time for me to make my predictions for the Texas Tech Football Season.

I have done my research this summer- aka I drank a lot of beer and this:

Here are My Predictions:

09/03 at SMU WIN

Tech will score Often and Early. The Hero will be the Short Yardage Punter who pinned the SMU Mustangs inside their own 10 on all of Texas Tech's Second Half Drives as Coach Leach didnt want SMU coach Phil Bennett to accuse him of running up the score this year.

09/08 UTEP WIN

UTEP will be without Jordan Palmer Plus this game is In Lubbock No contest..

09/15 at Rice WIN

The only thing good happening on the Field for Rice will be whatever funny thing the MOB does.

09/22 at Oklahoma St WIN

T Boone Pickens will have a heartattack as Raider Red kicks the Creepy Cowboy mascots ass all over the place.

09/29 N'west St WIN

Directional Schools from Louisana do not play Tech well- I wouldnt bring my non-existant kids to this slaughter it might scar them for life.

10/06 Iowa St WIN

The Cyclones will still have ghey uniforms no matter which one you vote on below and it wont help them in this game.

10/13 #25 Texas A&M WIN

We own the Aggies especially in Lubbock. Fran better start packing his bags.

10/20 at Missouri WIN

Missouri's hasn't shown me anything since Truman was in office.

10/27 Colorado WIN

Dan Hawkins might be a good coach but his players are wimps and his team is still going to suck. Plus there is payback from last year

11/03 at Baylor WIN

The Teddy Bears will allow the Raider's 3rd stringers to be Big 12 Players of the Week

11/10 at #4 Texas WIN

Coach Buttertooth wont be saved by Roy Williams, Chance Mock, Vince Young or Keith Toogood- Raiders win big in Austin.

11/17 #8 Oklahoma WIN

Its in Lubbock- the Raiders will be pissed from letting last years game slip through their fingers and take care of Mobilehoma U.

At the End of the Year you will be seeing this for realz

Be sure and check out The Weakly Retort

Our very own sicko PsychoAg has published this week's Retort...

SMU - would you care to host a gay prom?

Why certainly!

Whoa horsey! My mustang is outta control! Why that there is a fine lookin' young cowboy. You don't think the Methodist preacher will mind?

NOTE: The following portion of this post has been DELETED by the DicoTech! editors as we do NOT post about Religion or Politics.

Is "D. None of the Above" an option?

Let's make sure and go vote for the ugliest helmet. Good thing is - we win no matter which one they choose.

I am, of course, late to the party - voting ends tomorrow.

Might I Suggest Ordering a Pizza, Coach Leach?

From the Red Raider Football Notebook in today's A-J:

Turn the channel

When asked for the second time this week what he'd be doing with his team not playing Saturday, coach Mike Leach said he's not that fired up about watching football games.

"Part of it - and I'm not kidding - you sit there Sunday and Monday and watch 12 of them and all kinds of cutups,'' Leach said. "You're ready for something a little bit different.''

Leach said he might not have a choice, however. His wife, Sharon, is football obsessed, he said.

"So I'll get beat over the head with it,'' Leach said. "In other words, I'll go home. I won't get anything to eat, because I'll have to wait until - I don't know - Toledo and Miami of Ohio have hit halftime or something like that.''

5th and long - Week 1

Hello U.S. Americans and welcome to college football season, 2007. I'll run through all of the Big 12 games each week, as well as some others of interest. This bloggy crap is a derivative of an e-mail I send out to friends and family, so I usually try and cover their alma maters as well as other "national interest" games. So there will probably be an odd choice show up in here from time to time. I've managed to finish about .500 against the line the last 4-5 years, so at $25 a game it's not enough loss to get me kicked out of the house, just sleeping on the couch some here and there. I'll put up Thursday's games today and update it later with the rest of the weekend later on. I hate Non-Con weeks because it makes for a huge schedule. The Vegas line (Sheridan, USA Today) will go next to the favorite, a ( ' ) denotes half a point. Let's roll.

#2 LSU (18) @ Miss. State (ESPN) - Starkville is never an easy place to play, and opening the year with a conference game is always a tricky deal, especially when you're talking about an MNC like LSU is this year. But don't worry. Somewhere along the way, Les Miles will insert Ryan Perrilloux as the starting QB or something and mess it all up. Probably won't be Thursday night, however. Meanwhile, Sylvester Croom is supposedly one of the guys on the "hot seat" at MSU, though he inherited a terrible football team when he took over and they showed some signs of life during the late part of last season, losing close games to the powers-that-be in the SEC, while taking down Georgia in the same stretch. It'll be an interesting night, but if things don't go well for the Bulldogs, they won't be chanting "Crooooooom," they'll be booing. LSU...28-16.

Weber State @ #24 Boise State - Can't find a line on this one, probably because Weber is I-AA or somesuch. And this isn't the NCAA Hoops Tourney, so no Weber upsets here. BSU...45-10. I ain't even putting Louisville on here, they're a Top 10 team playing tonight against Murray State, which again would be great in March on the hardwood, but not so much tonight.

Kent State @ Iowa State (3') - Well the Gene Chizik era is officially under way tonight in the city of the Ames. Iowa State is looking to redesign their helmets, which is probably a good idea, since I never really understood that bird in the tornado deal, which kinda looked like the Chicken Lady from the old "Kids in the Hall" TV show. College Football News (heretofore known as CFN) says Bret Meyer could be considered the best QB in his conference. I kinda quit reading right there. He's got his days, and he's still got 12-th year senior Troy Blythe to throw to, but I can't buy the best in the conference line just yet. OK, not ever. ISU will be a little too big and physical for the Flashes and will win, but I don't look for it to be real pretty for either team in Week 1. ISU...24-17.

America's Got Talent.....

Actually America has got IDIOTS. Here are some Examples....

IDIOT Number 1 Miss Teen South Carolina

Seriously I think the Line that the Principal from Billy Madison Sums this up best- "Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

IDIOT Number 2 Senator Larry Craig

No Shit Larry that you regret getting busted for trying to pick up some gay strange in an Airport Bathroom. Seriously how stupid do you think we are? Best thing you can do is resign and come out of the closet.

IDIOT Proof Number 3. VH1 Renews Scott Baio Reality TV Show.

Seriously Who really cares that Chachi is a commitaphobe but finally nutted up when he gets on/off again girlfriend preggers. The only thing better is atleast its not another season of the Coreys....

Yes Boys and Girls Passive Aggessor is back- no thanks to the creepy possums and stalking ex-girlfriends- things have finally settled down so I should be posting more often. Look for my Texas Tech Football Predictions later this week

Tom Lemming looks bored

I've never seen these videos before - and so we need to send out over the intertubals a big DiscoTech! thanks to TechStrong...

We've linked TechStrong to the right and hope you keep up with him...

Lemming shows up in Lubbock to see Coach Leach.

Lemming beginning to fade as he's seen video equipment once or twice before.

Lemming witnesses Coach Leach walking on water.

Great stuff. If you happen to see the full program on a CSTV program listing, let us know will ya?

What are the odds?

Sorry I've been gone for so long....family can become more important than this blog every once in awhile...

So we're only a few days away from kickoff in Dallas and I feel like I need to be sure that you are aware of the obvious...

The game will be on Labor Day - which is Monday, September the 3rd. The game will be aired on ESPN and ESPN HD (I don't have my hopes up for 1080i BTW) at 3:00 PM Central.

ESPN will once again have a crack squad calling the game - Dave LaMont on PBP and James Hasty on color. Hasty was a NFL CB for a number of years - I can't recall a single game that he's called so I'll be interested to see how he pronounces "Alex Trlica." Thankfully we don't have Cory Hodges on the team anymore - I mean that is SUCH a crazy name... *wink*

Dave Lamont - again - I did a Google Image Search for you and if this is you:

Dude, I have no idea who you are...but Wiki says you were the guy who drew the shortest of all straws:

-Dave Lamont and Terry Bowden were used for weekends when ABC had more games than usual.

Whoa. Terry Bowden duty? What did you do? Take pictures of Lauren? Okay, now I get it.

Onward...

Tech opened as a 9.5 point favorite on the road. And the line hasn't wavered too much, only being bought up to an 8.5 point advantage...

But I don't bet on my alma mater. *wink*

Wanna see all the lines? Link to the Lakes of Hell

Other games of note in my book:

Colorado home hosts to Colorado State... State is a 2.5 point dog in this one. If you have never watched this game, IMO it is the zaniest in-state rivalry game. These game always seem to go down to the wire, or with amazing comebacks. In the first week when so many teams are playing the Montana State's of the world - this will be a real live Duracell-fest. And if you're brave enough, I wouldn't lay the 2.5 and I would sack up and take State.

UConn @ Duke? Listen, if this were a rematch of a certain NCAA BBall Final I would definitely watch. But it's so not that.

Todd Dodge has a rude welcome to NCAA Football on Saturday as he takes his Mean Green to Norman. Dear Baby Jesus, please let the Mean Green survive.

Tennessee goes to Berkeley. OMG. Didn't they make a TV show that was similar?

NoCal and SoCal aren't that much different are they? *wink*

I'll always take Tennessee in any "big game" matchup against Cal. Call it a Holiday Bowl Bias.

finally - a Tech preview I can get my head around

This one I've never seen - but this Scipio Tex dude is as funny as I am.....okay....he's funnier.

But you remember who brought you to the show baby!

DiscoTech! has negotiated a contract with one of the best in the business to be a contributor for the duration of the 2007 Football campaign.

While he will toil in anonymity and yet be paid handsomely...he is the creator of one of the icons of Texas Tech Football. He is the man who singlehandedly re-shaped the way we think about our football team and our season...

How's the buildup? Any good? Annoying as hell?

One last thing before we stun you.

When you think of the stock market, what's the first thing that pops into your head?

No, not having to work 5 more years because you were so sure that penny stock was really going to be bought by Microsoft. Not that.

The Dow Jones?

The S& P 500?

Nasdaq?

As volatile as any of these...

We present the Cambonie Football Confidence Index!

You're going to need to click on the 2006 version above to see it in it's total glory.

Listen, we know that after the Colorado game none of us wanted to live. We have however, committed that we will keep this going all year long...and if we don't...well...it won't be the first or last time we've lied to you.

So keep an eye out for it. It will return. We've just signed the contract today so we'll be working on the whip cracking soon.

TTU System and Paul Foster are in kahoots

And that's a mighty good thing.

Foster donates $50Mil to Endow the Texas Tech University System's El Paso Medical School.

Anyone care to guess what they might call that school? Suprise! The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine.
Turns out Mr. Foster grew up in Snyder for a while and in Lovington, NM after that. He's a Baylor grad which makes me wonder if the folks at Baylor are peeved. I hope they aren't - he lives in El Paso and is making an effort to better his own community which is commendable beyond words.

Link to El Paso Times article

This gift surpasses Jerry Rawls' amazing gifts of $25Mil for the College of Business Administration and additionally $8Mil to build the Rawls Golf Course (Thank you Lord for that gift).

A couple of comments from the peanut gallery...

C'mon Lubbock A-J, Foster is not an oilman anymore than Rawls is in the glass business...Foster is a refiner of oil. Oil is his commodity input. Can someone (Editor, anyone?) at the A-J get clear on this, please.

A news release this morning indicated that one of the uses of the money would be to recruit and retain physicians in the El Paso area. Don't even get me started on that subject. It makes me even more humble that despite the failings of our medical insurance, medical malpractice and liability issues that one man would stand up and take that issue to heart in his community.

larry csonka can finally get off unemployment because...

AMERICAN GLADIATORS IS BACK!!!!11!!!ONE!!

NBC pumps up for 'Gladiators' redo
Competition show revived for midseason
NBC is getting into the ring with "American Gladiators," which has been revived by the Peacock for midseason.

The competition skein -- which featured players with names like Nitro, Turbo and Laser in its campy, early '90s syndie incarnation -- will be updated for the 21st century with new technology and twists. MGM TV, which was behind the original hit, is producing along with Reveille.

Peacock's interest in the revival actually predates the arrival of NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios co-chairman Ben Silverman, who began developing the project while still in charge of Reveille. Net confirmed last month that "Gladiator" was a priority at the net (Daily Variety, July 16).

"We've been circling around this property for a long time now," said Craig Plestis, exec VP of alternative programming, development and specials at NBC Entertainment. "It's truly what's not in the TV landscape right now. While everyone's zigging, I'm attracted to doing a zag."

Net wouldn't confirm the episodic order, but at least six segs are believed to be in the works. NBC could opt to launch the show as a one-week strip -- similar to how it bowed "Deal or No Deal" -- or as a weekly skein.

Airing in syndication from 1989-96, "American Gladiators" focused on physically fit amateur athletes who competed against the show's regulars (action stars, stunt professionals and pro athletes) in various physical strength and endurance competitions.

The show hit it big by showcasing David vs. Goliath-style battles in events such as the Joust, the Wall, the Eliminator and Hang Tough. Coincidentally, the original "Gladiators" shot its first several seasons at Universal Studios.

Plestis said he was particularly interested in the original U.K. version of "Gladiators," which focused even more on the characters and the behind-the-scenes stories of common folk going up against the show's powerful stars. The new "Gladiators," he said, "will have the scale, scope, different characters and family drama that the U.K. version had."

"We're not going to completely reinvent the wheel here," he said. "But we're making it better, faster and stronger."

Show will follow eight gladiators -- four men and four women -- as they take on contestants both male and female. This time, in a new wrinkle, the players will be given the opportunity to train for their match -- and viewers will be given a glimpse of their personalities prior to the actual competish.

MGM Worldwide TV co-prexy Jim Packer said reviving "Gladiators" was part of a strategy to mine the company's library and revive franchises for a new generation of TV viewers. Repeats of the original show are currently posting decent ratings on ESPN Classic, he noted.

"The timing to bring the franchise back is perfect, and NBC is the ideal home," Packer said. "It's a very big, grandiose type of show."

In the 10 years after "Gladiators" went off the air, Reveille managing director Mark Koops said, shows like "Fear Factor" raised the bar for stunt-driven shows, and thus it's more important than ever to find contestants with compelling backstories. Producers are currently scouting for new gladiators and hosts in addition to contestants. Koops will serve as an exec producer.

"Gladiators" marks the first co-production between MGM TV and Reveille. Under their arrangement, MGM Worldwide will handle international sales of the show, while Reveille will be in charge (with MGM's assistance) of selling new locally produced editions around the world.

Koops said Reveille is close to making several international deals, including co-productions in Australia and the U.K.

Besides Koops, exec producers include Reveille's Howard Owens, as well as "Fear Factor" alum David Hurwitz and original series creator Johnny Ferraro.

10 Days to go

The 1942 La Ventana provides plenty of yearning for the days of the leather helmet.

(you can click on and save if you like - the original image is much larger)

Unfortunately, no information was provided about the location of this particular game or those pictured although the fellow in the Cowboy hat must be the head man, Coach Dell Morgan. This, his first season after coming to Tech from Rice was culminated by a Sun Bowl appearance.

Tech finished with a 9 - 2 record with (winning all their home games BTW) wins against Abilene Christian, Centenary, New Mexico U., Creighton, St. Louis U., Hardin-Simmon* U., Oklahoma A&M, Loyola (played at Soldier Field) and Wake Forest. Losses came to the Miami Hurricanes (0-6) and Tulsa (0-6).

We were fierce in 1942, baby. Fierce.

*I swear that I typed this just as it appears in the annual.

NAACP on Vick

Why in the hell is the NAACP wanting the NFL to consider not suspending Vick after his prison sentence? Link

When did the dogfighting case become a race issue? If this were Tony Romo or Peyton Manning would R.L. White be up there asking the NFL to not suspend them? I highly doubt it. He is one funny guy though. I wonder if he meant to say that everyone loves his dick?

11 Days to Kickoff

This game film is especially memorable to me because it was the first time I had ever seen Tech play football on TV. I was blown away. Duke was coached by the great Steve Spurrier and at the time I thought for sure I would end up at Duke for my college years.

My future may not have gone exactly as planned, but that night damned near everything worked out for Tech Football.

And you can NOT watch this video and not wonder aloud "Man, James Gray was a stud."

The great strange land to the north

I keep looking for a reasonably complete version of the Stanley Marsh Dynamite Museum collection. It amazes me that no one has attempted to catalog these signs...or have they?

This is your official notice to direct me to such a book or website that catalogs these crazy ass signs.

I love them by the way. It makes Amarillo totally unique and they aren't obtrusive to me at all. I just realized that half of my readers have absolutely NO idea what the hell I'm talking about.

Although I'm unclear as to when the crazy ole Staley Marsh 3 (think Cadillac Ranch) started making these signs and erecting them on properties all around the Amarillo area...the bottom line is this...a crazy dude started making signs like the ones pictured in this post in the shape of typical traffic signs. "Road does not end" and "Lubbock is a grease spot" happen to be real knee slappers for my weird sense of humor.

My folks grew up in Yellow-ville and have always regaled me with stories about crazy Stan. It's a part of our Panhandle heritage I suppose. This is the one my mom likes to tell:

"He was so rich that he installed windows in his office that were double paned...and the gap between the glass was filled with packing peanuts (or similar material) and when he wanted to darken the room he would press a button and a vacuum would create a suction pulling the material into the space so as to block the sun. When he wanted light, turn off the vacuum and the material would fall back into wall space."

Don't you know that even to this day he loves it when people talk about how wacky he is...and we've been doing it for a long time.

Anyhow - if you happen to know of any more of of these - e-mail them to us...or get out there and photograph and catalog them - go make you some money young man!

Stephon Marbury on Michael Vick

This interview with Stephon Marbury discussing the Michael Vick dog fighting case really pisses me off for a few reasons.

"We don't say anything about people that shoot deers or shoot other animals. From what I hear dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors. And I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down. I think he's one of the superb athletes and I think he's a good human being. I just think he fell into a bad situation."
Aside from the childish vocabulary with his use of "deers" the first part of the interview just shows how ignorant Marbury is. Dogfighting is nowhere near being a sport. It is a brutal and heartless spectacle and comparing it to hunting is absurd. Hunters don't go out drown, mutilate and electrocute animals just because they don't live up to their expectations. Then he goes on to say that he is, "one of the superb athletes". What the hell does being an great athlete have anything to do with the charges brought against him. If there was another person that had a dogfighting ring the size that Vick had the authorities would be all over them as well. But him being a good human being???? Hell, Hitler killed millions of Jews but he was a good human being and he "just feel into a bad situation". Give me a break. Just because a guy is a great athlete and makes a mistake, if you can call the murder of innocent dogs a mistake, that he should not be torn apart by the media. Mike Vick did not have a problem with being put on a pedestal but Marbury justs wants the media to look the other way because he brutally killed dogs? Mr. Marbury you are a self entitled douche.

Bon Mots for TSO

Imagine my surprise to open the Dallas Morning News online to find this exceptionally good and fair article about Tech football and Mike Leach. Thanks, Kevin Sherrington, for being a voice of reason in the mud storm:

A Mike Leach culture primer: Excuse me if you've already seen this on YouTube, but in the spring of '06, Leach popped off that he predicts the weather by walking outside in his boxers every morning. A local meteorologist called him on it. Next thing you know, Leach is delivering the seven-day forecast and espousing his typical brand of bon mots .

For those of you who don't have calendars at home, Sunday is the first day of May . . .

I actually look forward to hail ...

How many times do you get to see it rain mud?

Mud storms, Mike?

"We get about six of them a year," he says. "They're something to see. I've even stopped meetings to watch 'em."

If you didn't already get the picture, you do now. His players already were used to it, which is why they weren't surprised by his halftime comments at the Insight Bowl.

Leach had long ago established his reluctance to withdraw and live to fight another day. The Raiders annually lead the nation in going for it on fourth down, and from just about anywhere on the field.

But circumstances hardly could have been worse against Minnesota. Down 28 points at the half, Leach calmly told his charges that they had the enviable opportunity to "make history."

Hey, Graham Harrell: What did you think of Leach's Knute Rockne speech?

"It wasn't anything inspiring, really," the junior quarterback says, smiling.

Maybe so, but, in the last 20 minutes of regulation and overtime, they mounted the greatest comeback in bowl history.

More Tramp Stamps

With news out that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not be driving the 8 car in 2008 I wonder how this woman will alter her tattoo?

If he is going to race 5 (I have no idea if that number is taken or not due to the fact that I'm not a NASCAR fan) she could just do something like a simple math problem 8-3=5.

The Houston Comical reviews Tech Football

...poorly

Read it here - and think about what's missing...

"They (Filani and Johnson) were really good players, they really got in sync with Graham last year and had a really big year, but we feel good about these guys," Riley said. "We feel like they can do some things those other two couldn't.

Zing! Jarrett Hicks who? Riley not the Comical even mention him (hasn't he caught more TDs than any receiver at Tech? Just wondering aloud. He did win any Rotary awards for citizenship, but still...

Shannon Woods? Fighting for a starting job? Not interesting?

O-Line loses 4 starters?

BTW - I know that the print edition has a more detailed breakdown by unit - but the Comical has not made that available to the interweb masses - we haven't paid our 50 cents.

Watch your Raiduhs beat the Aggies....again

1982 - Tech @ The Tacklebox

Jerry Moore vs. Jackie Sherrill

Gabe Rivera versus the Aggie offense.

And I just realized that the guy in charge of the sound was making a side income dubbing porn tracks as well...I fully expected to see a cheerleader tryst in the locker room at the half. I must admit I was a little disappointed.

Ask an Aggie why they couldn't pack 'em in and sell it out, huh. I sure saw a lot of empty seats for a conference game.

Your grandma ain't that smart

From SI.com...

First my hopes were so high but then I had my e-feelings hurt a little bit tonight:(

I wondered aloud - is the Big 12 player mentioned below a Red Raider? Is he reading DiscoTech! brilliance? Is he forwarding the Disco site address to all his buddies?

And then I realized that I'm missing out on a small but important demographic - the student-athlete blog reader. Most of these guys aren't even reading my unbelievably intelligent musings!

It is clear though that athlete's grandmas are posting on Texags. That explains some, but not all, of the mystery.

8. Do you read message boards or blogs where fans discuss your team?

Yes: 39.5%
No: 60.5%

Notes: For the purposes of this survey, if a player answered "sometimes," it was counted as a "yes" response... Twenty-four players answered "yes" outright, while 23 answered "sometimes." ... Approximately 68 percent of BCS players responded "no," compared to approximately 51 percent of non-BCS players.

Quotable: "I read it if I want to have a good laugh," said one Big 12 player. "Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they're showing their opinions, but at the end of the day, they don't know what's going on." ... Most players who responded "no" said the people who write on message boards or blogs do not know what they're talking about. Said one MAC player: "My grandma could guess the same thing."

Chock full of lol

Wow - so much news today that there's no way to cover it all and do it total justice. The waves from today will be far reaching. I'm going to provide you a list of links and you can read the stories for yourself. So go read and then we'll chat...in all cases but the last we thank VeloNews for being such a great place for cycling news.

1. Contador maintains his innocence in a prepared statement.
2. Team Discovery disbands - unable (unwilling?) to capture a new sponsor
3. Team Discovery/Tailwind Sports - why did they throw in the towel?
4. Hincapie to ride in Pink for T-Mobile (HT: spare cycles)

Wow - gotta have a sip of the Knob Creek before I press on...

So I think that story number 3 tells the tale. Bruyneel to retire. Lance back to the US mainland to continue to raise money and fight cancer. The impeccable track record of USPS/Discovery. And of course the bitter fight between the Tour and the UCI over doping enforcement.

It's a sad day for me to be sure...I grew up with this team. It's as if the Spurs were to just pack it in and say "You know, we've had a helluva run." Except that the NBA is a wealthy enterprise with amazing TV revenues.

So what do you say?

Let's go buy Contador's contract and start us a cycling team! We can't sign Big George he's already flown the coop...but let's give it a ride...

See you next year Conti...

Nashville aka Texas Tech East

Google Image Search...man you gotta watch yourself with that thing - it can lead you down the path to the lakes of fire...

FINALLY!

The Tennessean came through. Now I can put the gun away. And thank goodness, my arm was getting tired.

In other news, I watched the Indy @ Dallas game last night and came away impressed with my Pokes' performance. I was really keeping an eye on the aforementioned Keyunta Dawson. Looks like to me he played only about two defensive series and was truly disruptive to the Cowboys on two possessions that were in the Colts end of the field. I can't help but think he's going to do well in Indy.

Obviously, the Lions game was not on TV in Texas, so Lions fans are welcome to comment on Manny's performance.

Meat Science Academic Team Claims National Championship

Quiz bowl team clinches third national title in six years.

Written by Cory Chandler

There were no rings, no parades, no explosions of confetti, but Texas Tech University’s academic quiz bowl team recently rounded out a trio of national titles – proving that the San Antonio Spurs aren’t the only dynasty emerging out of Texas this summer.

The team won the 2007 national championship at the 60th annual Reciprocal Meats Conference, marking the third time in the bowl’s six-year history that Red Raiders have earned the title.

This year’s competition, held at South Dakota State University, featured more than 20 university teams from across the nation. Texas Tech defeated Angelo State University in the finals to take the top spot..

Participating schools can field two teams with up to three members each. Universities such as Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and the University of Nebraska send students to match wits.

Texas Tech team members included Landi Woolly, Travis O’Quinn, Matt Sellers, Meagan Mitchell, Travis Chapin and Austin Voyles.

Texas Tech teams also claimed the national title in 2005 and 2003. So while there may not be any commemorative T-shirts, perhaps a steak dinner is in order.

The comparison to the incomparable San Antonio Spurs might be the tiniest bit of a stretch don't ya think?

Couldn't help but to post this story fellas...back to our original programming...

UT has character!

So, I got this in an email today. Pretty good stuff. It wasn't credited, so if you know who did it...I dunno...tell 'em good job or something, especially on the logo in the center. The texture they added to the type is a real nice touch.

More notes on Key Dawson in Indy's camp

Here's what I think Colts fans...according to the now world-famous NYTimes Magazine article written by Michael Lewis, we know that a few NFL teams have become increasingly interested Texas Tech's game video and ask for a copy after every Tech game.

I don't think it would be too far a leap to suggest that the Indianapolis Colts are one of the teams requesting the video. After all, wouldn't one offensively minded team want to learn from another?

Is it any real shocker then, that Indy has more than a few Texas Tech kids running around the facility? I count Key Dawson, Dylan Gandy and free-agent rookie Gabe Hall. Not to mention former Raider and Colt Montae Reagor.

HT: Scout.com

Keyunta Dawson: Sure, he's a rookie and he's only 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. But Dawson is already impressing in camp as a disruptor whether he lines up at defensive end or defensive tackle. The Colts may not want him out there in short-yardage situations, but he could throw off the rhythm of running backs with his ability to shoot the gap, similar to the way Montae Reagor did the last couple of years, and that would allow others to swarm in for the tackle. As an added bonus, Dawson can put some terror into quarterbacks on passing downs.

Colts fans - I recommend watching the Tech vs. Minnesota Insight Bowl video on NFL.com for a taste of Texas Tech football - you won't be disappointed at the end, I promise.

Way to go Keyunta (we call him "Key") Dawson!

Catching up a (very) little bit w/ Manny Ramirez

Excited for Exhibition
With the first preseason game a day away, Detroitlions.com asked Lions’ players how they were feeling about getting out on the field to face a true opponent after two weeks of lining up against teammates in practice.

Detroitlions.com also spoke to some of the new faces around Allen Park about preparing for their first NFL game.

G Manny Ramirez: “You know, I’m really excited. We’re going to be getting a lot of reps so they can see what we’re capable of doing. It’s a different kind of situation, so I’m really excited about getting out there and going at it with Cincinnati. I feel prepared; I’ve had the veteran offensive linemen take me underneath their wings. They show me every little mistake that I make; they point it out to me and get on me about it. They just want to make sure that I get it correct, so that when it’s game time there won’t be any worries.”

I'm sure you'll be just fine Manny - hope to see you on the field soon...

Please, Dear God, not again...

I swear, if this guy does anything other than provide evidence that the press is FOS - then I think I might throw up...

Contador plans Friday announcement
Filed: August 8, 2007

Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has scheduled a press event this Friday in Spain, but says he will decline to answer reporters' questions after he reads a prepared statement.

Contador issued a release Wednesday notifying media of his plans to read a statement at the offices of Spain's national sports council - the Consejo Superior de Deportes - in Madrid.

Contador will be accompanied by Discovery Channel team director Johann Bruyneel.

Since winning the 2007 Tour de France, Contador has been the subject of heightened scrutiny regarding his possible involvement with Eufemio Fuentes, the Madrid doctor at the center of the OperaciĆ³n Puerto doping investigation.

I just can not imagine the damage this would cause to Discovery...and now I wonder if this is the reason for the delaying of the announcement of Discovery's replacement sponsor...

The appearance of Bruyneel at the presser makes me hope for good news - I can't imagine he would "stand by" a rider who will admit to involvement in doping...

Disco will have their fingers crossed for sure.

Not to wish ill on a teammate...

...But many a career has been launched because of an injury to a starter. Techsans certainly hope that Booger McFarlane's career is not in jeapordy, but we do hope that this can create an opening just small enough for Key Dawson to take advantage of...

IndyStar.com

Coach Tony Dungy confirmed Monday that McFarland damaged the patella tendon in one of his knees during a practice Friday and likely faces surgery.
"It's something where he's not going to be back in the next three, four weeks,'' Dungy said. "It's a long-term injury.''
That leaves the Colts with a huge hole to fill in the middle of their defensive line, and that only partly refers to McFarland's 300-pound frame. In eight seasons, he has appeared in 109 regular-season games, 95 as a starter. He started 15 games for the Colts last season, including the playoffs, after arriving in a trade with Tampa Bay.
With McFarland out, the Colts will move forward with Raheem Brock at one starting defensive tackle spot, and . . . well, someone else at the other.

The list of replacement candidates is long, but short on pedigree. Darrell Reid and Dan Klecko have appeared in a combined 62 games but share only four starts. Four of the other five prospects are rookies, including third-round draft pick Quinn Pitcock and seventh-rounder Keyunta Dawson, who has been moved inside after spending most of the offseason at end.

Best of luck Key...

Over-stickered cars!

Cabron Guey brings up an interesting subject with his UT Camaro pic. At what point does a person have "too much" school spirit? I say an alumni association sticker and logo are sufficient (mainly because that's what's on my car!). What say you, dear reader?
I've always said Aggies are the biggest violators, and the pic below, which was taken on a recent trip to the panhandle, confirms this. Could this be the truck of a well-known rp.com poster? Hmmm?

Windell Middlebrooks - Rising Star

Windell Middlebrooks had me laughing at the first Miller High Life commercial - but I couldn't believe my eyes tonight when I saw him on Entourage attempting to deliver E's desk and calling Johnny Drama a Smurf...

I don't think he's worried about being typecast as a delivery driver by the way.

OnMilwaukee.com delivers the background story on Windell who hails from Foat Worff.

Maybe TVTanline can come through again with another screen cap...

Cheers, Windell.

If there's a clock, a ball or a score - count me in...

This is an important time of the year for Bond J Bond.

You may not know me very well, and like any celebrity I may a bit of an enigma.

So let me tell you this one thing...I love sport.

I love the feel of a basketball as I shoot it over the fingers of a defender from three land...I love the feel of a September morning in the parking lot of "The Jones" and the smell of the barbeques as they crank it up on Saturday morning...I love cheering for Arsenal, a team I've only seen on TV - and wonder why most of America can't see the beauty of soccer...The first baseball game I ever went to was at Wrigley Field, so I guess you could say I was pre-destined to love the smell of stale beer and infield grass forever...When the Cowboys play on Sunday I can hardly sit down for longer than 10 minutes at a time because I'm just too nervous, to see me during the playoffs or a Super Bowl where the Pokes are involved might make you pull your hair out...I went to the very first game of the very first NBA Finals the Spurs were ever in and the crowd was so loud I learned what it means to be so loud "you can't hear yourself think" and it was awesome...I wish like crazy that I had spent more time at Dan Law field when I was in school...I think people are crazy when they say they don't like hockey - more than likely they haven't been to a game - and I still think hockey players are the best athletes. I'll never forget going to my first Stras game in Dallas and nearly crapping my pants when the crowd screamed "Stars" during the Star Spangled Banner...There's no better feeling in the world than when I'm on the green in two on my home course's number 13...And I love the Tour de France thanks to Lance Armstrong - and I still do even after he's gone on to other things - I find it so amusing when US sports fans complain about doping cyclists as it was only a few years ago they were packing stadiums to marvel at Bonds, Sosa and McGuire...I watch golf tournaments even when Tiger's not in the field and root for "Lefty" because he's the anti-Tiger...I wish like crazy that there would be an effort to consolidate boxing belts because more Saturday nights should feature title belt fights than mean something...

In general I'm just not that interested in sports where judging is involved. Maybe it's my type A personality that requires a winner and a loser. The idea that someone else would decide a winner and not a clock or a score just has no appeal to me.

And I didn't even mention half-a-dozen "Olympic" sports that I'll watch for a while every four years.

The FA Community Shield was played today which means the EPL season starts next weekend. NFL training camps are in full swing and the Hall of Fame game gave us a few minutes of a tease. My Cubbies are fighting for a playoff spot and October is right around the corner. There's only one more major to be played and I'm thinking Tiger's feeling the pressure and doesn't want to be "Oh-fer-the-majors" this year. And even though the NBA is in its off-season, the schedule was just released, and we learned that Greg Oden gets to watch another banner raised into the rafters at AT&T Center...have fun, kid.

Not enough Red Raider related topics for you?

What the hell do you think this blog is for? Improving my marriage?

When a Teeshirt Fan Takes it Too Far

He may have never attended a game at DKR Memorial Stadium, but damnit, he's got a teeshirt and now a car to show his undying support for the Longhorns! Can you beat that?

Help a Raider out...

Just found this in my "inbox" - sorry about the delay in posting it...

Hello
I'm a regular reader of your blog, and a Tech student. I was asked if I'd create a podcast at Tech that covered Tech Sports and other sports. I'm looking for another student at Tech with a great knowledge of Tech sports and sports in general to do the podcast with me. If you, or any Tech student you know who is currently in Lubbock is interested in this, email me back. I would like to get it started before fall semester.

Give us a shout if you're game to help him out - e-mail the blog and I'll hook you up.

The e-mail has nothing to do whatsoever with this video...I've had quite a bit of whiskey tonite so you should remember that before you get on my case...

The inaugural ride of the Masked Rider....

This is what it'll look like...

(Huff probably won't be in there, though!)
