While you have your credit card out...

(Pic above HT to TTDaddy of the Raiderpower.com forums)

I have to pimp a product that I absolutely believe in, that I love and that I use frequently. A product my wife is envious of and cautions me not to overuse because it causes her to become jealous. I whip it out when I'm bored and press a few buttons and "Shazaaaam!" I'm in ecstasy, a feeling that can only be replicated by the real thing IYKWIMAITYD.

Red Raider Replay is the absolute greatest thing to happen to me since the interwebs.

Our beloved Red Raider Football squad isn't on TV every weekend and where I live it can be hard to catch them on the radio as well (insert your comment about Sirius radio here).

So the Harvard of the High Plains prints a DVD with pre and post-game material, cuts out the freaking commercials completely (Hooray Beer!) and even includes the video of the Goin' Band from Raiderland kickin' it. We never lose halftime - ain't it great?

All you have to do is go HERE...put it on your card and tell your wife that you made a donation to the Thompson Hall reconstruction project because that girl you met that night at Midnight Rodeo gave you the clap and you owe them at least this much. Then go into debt and file bankruptcy...but at least you'll still have Michael Crabtree to keep a smile on your face.

Be a good Red Raider and buy a coffee table first

AT&T renames HQ in honor of Whitacre
Web Posted: 06/28/2007 08:06 PM CDT

Sanford Nowlin
Express-News Business Writer

San Antonio-based AT&T Inc. has renamed its downtown headquarters building "Whitacre Tower" in honor of retired CEO Edward E. Whitacre, the man who led the company through a string of mergers that grew it from the runt of the Baby Bell phone companies into the nation's biggest telecommunications provider.

In addition, the company's AT&T Foundation will provide a $5.35 million grant to Texas Tech University to expand the school's engineering programs. Whitacre, who retired June 3, graduated from Texas Tech with an engineering degree.

AT&T's board approved the renaming of the building at a meeting Thursday.

"Ed Whitacre transformed the company and this industry," said Randall Stephenson, who took over as CEO and chairman after Whitacre's retirement. "It is very fitting that the building where so many industry-changing decisions were made should be named in his honor."

At his retirement, Whitacre was the longest-serving CEO in the telecom industry, having spent 44 years at the company, 17 as chairman and CEO. Whitacre, who led the company during its 1992 relocation to San Antonio, presided over $285 billion in acquisitions, including its takeover last year of BellSouth Corp.

The grant to Texas Tech will create two endowed chairs named for Whitacre in the school's electrical and computer engineering program. It also will create a scholarship named for the retired executive and will expand a university lab that studies light at the subatomic scale.

Tech has always counted on Mr. Whitacre for so much and despite that, he continues to direct substantial gifts to the University. We'll be sure to post more information later on Jerry Rawls, but wanted to be sure that Mr. Whitacre is put in the spotlight for his continued support.

Thanks!

Feilhaber's strike earns U.S. the Gold Cup

CHICAGO -- Change the venue, change the coaches, change the players. The only thing that doesn't change when Mexico and the United States play is the result. Landon Donovan scored his 34th career goal, tying Eric Wynalda atop the career list, and Benny Feilhaber connected on a gorgeous volley as the United States rallied for a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. The victory extended the Americans' dominance over their neighbors to the south and gave them a berth in the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa. The United States is 9-2-1 against Mexico since 2000, including 8-0-1 on U.S. soil.

This is the fourth Gold Cup title for the Americans, tying them with Mexico. It also kept new coach Bob Bradley's unbeaten record intact at 10-0-1. Bradley took over as interim coach after Bruce Arena was let go after the World Cup, and was given the job permanently May 16.

I wish I had video to show you Benny's goal - it was world-class...I'll update this post as soon as I see it...

Viva Benny!

Viva Bob Bradley!

Storm sewer in Calgary gets pissed and decides to distribute its contents in explosive fashion...this by the way is strikingly similar to my post-Mexican food outing last night....

Here's what I don't understand - at the beginning of the video it looks pretty clear that there is no top or covering on this gigantic hole...then later it looks like a truck gets what looks like a giant manhole cover thrown onto its engine (I hope the driver is okay)...where did that thing come from?

Josh Bard is nothing but trouble

ESPN.com

About that home run ...: San Diego was leading 2-0 with Mike Cameron on second when Bard hit a pitch off the foul pole in the left field corner and hopped out of the batter's box. He then threw up his hands in disbelief after third base umpire Brian Knight ruled it a foul ball. After Padres manager Bud Black argued the call, the umps huddled and Bard was given the home run. Red Sox manager Terry Francona came out and spoke with crew chief Dana DeMuth, then vented on Knight and got tossed.

So when he finally does get the call, the opposing manager goes postal. "You #@$%$#& aren't being consistent!" Francona was heard screaming..."You umps should know that when he hits a homer you make sure you send him back to his dugout! What's going on here?"

Josh Bard did show some restraint last night, but you have to figure that for about 2 minutes there he was ready to hand in his MLBPA card and go home.

Good job Josh - I love it when you send the opposing manager to the showers...especially Francona.

Henry to sign for Barcelona
Associated Press
MADRID, Spain -- Thierry Henry is leaving Arsenal to sign with Barcelona in one of European soccer's major transfers of the offseason.

Barcelona will pay $32 million for the 29-year-old forward, who agreed to a four-year contract, Cadena Ser radio and the newspaper El Pais said Friday. Barcelona planned to announce the signing on Saturday.
Henry has been with Arsenal since 1999, scoring a club-record 226 goals in 364 appearances. He helped the Gunners win two English Premier League titles and four Football Association Cups.
Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

So I sure hope Rob van Persie can stay healthy this year - becuase I don't see Gilberto and Adebayor carrying the load...I mean when Henry was out we played better as a unit, but we struggled to score so much...
I sure hope they have big plans for all this money they're about to get...
As always I remain true to my Gunners, and wait for a better day...

Hmmmm....that's a little ironic

I feel very sorry for this young girl. But the irony that she was on a Superman ride that removed her ability to walk is astounding.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/21/six.flags.accident/

CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

An unidentified witness told CNN affiliate WLKY she saw a cable on the ride snap.

"The people on the ride just came and hit the ground," she said. "When I got up there, the lady she was just sitting there, and she didn't have no legs. ... And she was just there, calm, probably in shock from everything."

"That could have been all of us -- riding that ride," witness Whitney Sandfer told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

During the ride, passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped, according to the park's Web site.

Passengers drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," it adds.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke, I heard -- pwchh -- and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Superman Tower of Power, told WDRB/WMYO.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," Stinnett said.

The ride was introduced in 1995.

Can you catch up with Jonathan Johnson?

TexasTech.cstv.com just ran a fantastic story on Jonathan Johnson...the only Tech athlete that I know of that was a student and on the Olympic team simultaneously.

The last time I was in Lubbock was actually during the 2004 Olympics. I watched Jonathan race on tape delay at the old Hub City Brewery. I made sure that day to not look at the web or the TV so that the semi-final heat he ran in was a surprise.

I was a kick to see him represent Tech so well.

He said his ultimate goal for his career would be to win a medal at the Olympics and everything he does is geared towards that.

"That is something that hasn't been done in a while for an American in the 800m. For me to do that would be something special and I'm really going to work hard to do that. I'm definitely on the right track. I'm as focused as I have ever been. There are only three medalists at the Olympic Games, so that's three out of the whole world. I know that I have to take care of business and I have to do everything that I can right now and put the work in to be right where I want to be."

A Shout-out to Bob Knight's Eyebrows

Hope all is well with you wherever you are Andre....we miss watching you.

I gotta go with Emmett!

"That's why I asked you out!?!"

We appreciate our readers as they continue to tip us off to amazing stuff. Keep it coming!

I always wondered if Alexi Lalas got high...

And now I know he does. ESPN Soccernet with a story out this morning has Alexi Lalas claiming that MLS players could "hold their own" in the EPL, and that fans wouldn't notice a "drop in quality (of play)."

Favorite quote from the article:
"The fact that a segment of the world worships an inferior product in the Premiership is their business,'' Lalas said in an interview with The Guardian published Tuesday.

Wow.

Just...wow.

I don't really know where to start, so I'll ramble on a bit I'm sure.

Yes, the MLS has come a long way. Yes, the MLS has done a good job of player development thus far. And yes, now that US Soccer has finally hired Mr. Bradley and removed the "interim" from his title, now I think we can win more than 3 World Cup matches...

BUT.

Put Arsenal or Bolton or Aston Villa on the same field with the Rapids, or DC or the Galaxy...and 5 times out of 5 the MLS team gets spanked...and 5 times out of 5 Alexi Lalas will have to eat his boot...

Sports Argument Wiki - Texas Tech Red Raiders

Don't forget to add your useless trivia to the Oklahoma and A&M sections!

A great gift idea for your Red Raider...

A few years ago I was turned on to an out-of-print book titled "Evolution of a University: Texas Tech's First 50 Years" by Jane Gilmore Rushing and Kline A. Nall (Madrona Press, Texas Tech Publishing, 1975)

While I was at Tech I probably would have disregarded this book. Today, as an alumnus, I regard it as fine reading. So much information about the politics involved with the creation of the college, the attiitudes toward the Panhandle by those in Austin, and those who stuck their nose out to leave their legacy in the form of Texas Tech University...

Mike Leach is a Good Guy

First - Big thanks to "srsuraider" from the Raiderpower.com Forums for tipping DiscoTech off to this jewel...

On with the show...

Mike Leach recently signed a football that he donated to the Captain Andrew R. Houghton Foundation. While I'm sure that Coach Leach does this to help organizations all the time, this is the first time that DiscoTech has been tipped off, and I felt like the organization which benefited deserved some attention.

From http://www.andrewhoughton.org/:

The foundation was formally established on November 1, 2004, as a means to honor the memory of Captain Andrew R. Houghton. Captain Andrew R. Houghton was a true American Patriot who died at Walter Reed Army Hospital on August 9, 2004, at 25 years of age as a result of injuries sustained during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Andy was severely wounded in an attack on his Bradley Fighting Vehicle near Samarra, Iraq. Andy was a 2001 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, and a graduate of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, Houston, Texas.

Captain Houghton was a hero not only because of the way he died, heroically serving a country that he loved, but more importantly because of the way he lived. Selfless service to others defined Andrew R. Houghton’s life as did the West Point motto “Duty, Honor, Country.

The foundation was formed in order to provide a lasting, perpetual memorial to Captain Houghton, by providing support and benefits to those organizations recognized as exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code which were supported by Captain Andrew R. Houghton, specifically including organizations providing recordings for the blind, such as Taping for the Blind, Inc., and the Special Olympics, and to such other exempt organizations that exemplify the ideals to which he was dedicated, such as Laity Lodge Youth Camp, Kerrville, Texas. The organization will provide scholarships and grants to students of good character and similar ideals, specifically including the students of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, Houston, Texas. The organization will also provide emergency financial assistance for travel expenses to the cadets from Texas attending the United States Military Academy at West Point.

DiscoTech, as always, supports our troops who put themselves in harm's way so that I can sit here and blog while my wife screams in my ear to get the phone.

We also appreciate our readers as they continue to flatter us with incredible work of other Red Raiders as they "Bear Their Banners Far and Wide."

EDIT/NOTE (6/19/07 @ 8:30 am CDT):

The Andy Houghton Foundation would also like to note that Andy's brother, Matt is a 2003 Grad of Texas Tech and is serving his country as well and is now known as LT Matt Houghton...

Buffs get new unis - #26's hair says "Hi!"

(Click to get a bigger image of #26's hair-greeting)

For you uniform junkies out there - there will be a new look for the Buffs this year - good to see Dan Hawkins is serious about moisture wicking...

cubuffs.com

The revolutionary changes involve new age fabrics and materials that will benefit the players during game conditions. From a design standpoint, incorporating one of the official school colors, silver, back into the uniform for the first time since 1981 was one of the main components of the makeover. Overall, it will make for a faster looking, modern design.

As long as they look faster, that's the key...

Of course I should shut my mouth, they layed a beatdown on us last year and revealed that our team wasn't at all mentally tough...but this is uniform smack, y'all!!!

ESPN The Magazine is Dreadful

I'll never forget the day I opened my ESPN Mag following Phil Mickelson's first major title win at Augusta...because there was not a single word written about it.

Lightning has just struck again.

Wouldn't you think that the NBA Finals would deserve some coverage? I mean, every other news outlet has been on their knees, so willing to satisfy LeBaron........LeBroad.......well you know, what's-his-name...

I suppose ESPN figures that they're filling the airwaves to LeBrim with their TV coverage of His Titlelessness, so no coverage in The Mag is okey-dokey.

Either way, their editor should turn on the TV...

Big 12 no longer running back factory
Teams searching for new breed of ball-carriers.

Just a few years ago, the Big 12 Conference was a factory for star running backs position. The 2003 NFL Pro Bowl featured three Big 12-bred backs: Ahman Green (Nebraska), Ricky Williams (Texas) and Priest Holmes (Texas.)

But as spread passing offenses became popular, fewer elite backs populated the conference. In the NFL drafts from 2000-06, only four Big 12 backs were selected during the first three rounds, none of whom are established stars in the NFL to date: Chris Brown (Colorado), Tatum Bell (Oklahoma State), Vernand Morency (Oklahoma State) and Cedric Benson (Texas).

Season Predictions for 2007 Football - Baylor

A quick disclaimer to any Bear fans that might stumble across this prediction: I'm a casual observer of Big XII teams and a fan of Texas Tech first and foremost. You probably know a lot more about your team than I do, so take this prediction for what it's worth: entertainment and a way to pass the time between now and the start of Fall Camp. With that said, on with the predictions:

Hottest Position Battle: QB - With Shawn Bell's departure due to graduation, the only thing hotter than an August day in Waco will be the battle for the job as Starting QB. The job will come down to either Blake Szymanski, who started the final 3 games of the season for the Bears due to an injury to Bell, or to Michael Machen, who elected to transfer to Baylor from Kent State for his final season of eligibility. Cabron Guey predicts Machen to get the nod from the coaching staff when it's all said and done.

SEASON PREDICTIONS

at TCU - TOSSUP - Losses of key personnel at several positions on both the Offense and the Defense, including the QB position, due to graduation and the NFL draft will leave TCU with a dearth of depth that might prove unable to match up with the dizzying assortments of routes the Bears plan to run. This one will be close, so don't forget to tune into CSTV for the game.

vs Rice - WIN - Rice pays a visit to its old Southwest Conference foe in a game that shows how much better off Baylor is for having joined the Big XII Conference.

Texas State - WIN - TSU is no pushover Division I-AA... excuse me... NCAA Championship Subdivision team. However, the difference in talent levels between a Division I-A and Division I-AA team will show in the 2nd half as Baylor pulls away for the win.

at Buffalo - WIN - AT BUFFALO? Who in their right mind schedules a game at the home of one of the worst teams in college football? Baylor, of course, if they want a return game in Waco. The Bears will prove to be too much for the Bulls in what is shaping up so far to be a pretty good season for Baylor.

at Texas A&M - LOSS - Here we go... now things get interesting. You can never rule out Baylor in the Battle on the Brazos, but the Aggies will not be overlooking the Bears as in previous years. Expect the Aggie ground game to chew up the clock, never allowing the Bears' Air Game to get into rhythm.

vs Colorado - WIN - Things haven't quite come together for the Buffaloes in Dan Hawkins' second year at the helm. Colorado may give a scare to one or two of the bigger programs, but it'll probably lose in Waco today.

at Kansas - TOSSUP - This is a Must Win for Baylor as things are only going to get harder from here on out. Should Baylor beat TCU in the opener, this game will be a battle to make Baylor a bowl-eligible. This one will come down to how well Kansas can execute its game plan and don't give up the victory when it is in hand, something the Jayhawks have been known to do in the past.

vs Texas - LOSS - Texas comes to town as one of the hotter teams in the nation. Baylor will be nothing more than a speed bump on their way to a possible BCS game.

at Kansas State - LOSS - October may prove to be a disasterous month for the Bears in the State of Kansas if they don't take care of business at KU two weeks before they face the Wildcats.

vs Texas Tech - LOSS - The Bears' luck doesn't change yet, even though the Texas Tech game is the most winnable contest between their bouts with Texas and Oklahoma. The stakes will be high should Baylor come into this game with only 4 wins, as they would probably need to beat Tech and OSU to advance to the post-season.

at Oklahoma - LOSS - In their last trip to play Oklahoma as the away team, the Bears almost pulled off the upset on the Sooners. This one may be close for a quarter or two, but the Sooners will pull away in the end.

vs Oklahoma State - WIN - If you had to mark down a loss for Okie Lite in 2007 that doesn't make sense, this game will be it. Baylor gets a nice win to end the regular season with a record anywhere from 5-7 to 7-5.

Fourteen Year Old Kills 1,051 Pound UT Booster

WACO, TX (AP) - The McLennan County Sheriff's Department confirmed the death yesterday of Joe Roy Finley, an oilman, rancher, car dealer, and prominent UT booster.

Finley, 63, who was often featured in University of Texas athletic publications as a 'Super Fan', and was famous for his extremely large size and cat-like reflexes, proved to be no match for the 50-caliber pistol of James Ferguson, a fourteen-year old hunter prowling the back pastures of his father's ranch.

(AP) - James Ferguson poses with the kill

Ferguson shot Finley 12 times over the course of two hours, finally felling him after a long lunch break.

His father, Steve Ferguson, expressed pride in his son's acc
omplishment.

"We was just minding our own business, tendin' (sic) to our broke '52 Fairlane, when James he done (sic) says, 'Daddy, I seen (sic) somethin' big. Real big'. I told him that whatever's be (sic) back there ain't got no business being back there, so he should go after it," Ferguson said.

The death of Finley sent shockwaves through the UT athletic community, including several prominent alumni. "I'll never forget that summer I interned at his ranch," said Ricky Williams from his hillside hovel in backcountry Tibet. "It was all boobs and booze and pot and I got paid $23 an hour to make sure the back fence gate stayed shut. It was great. Enough deep background though. When are we going on the record?"

Ricky Williams - never the brightest feller.

Chris Simms, former quarterback, also had fond memories of time spent working for Finley.

"I remember the summer between my s
ophomore and junior years, Daddy didn't want me out past 8 o'clock, and Joe invited me to a party at his ranch one afternoon, and I was totally like, I can't even go, the parentals would be sooooooo pissed, and Joe was like, fuck your Daddy son, you're on your own now, and I was like, yeah, so I DID, and I went to the party and EVERYONE was there and we had sooooooo much fun and I didn't get home till almost 11:30 and I just ignored the messages Daddy had left for me and I didn't even call him the next day before breakfast!" Simms said. "Mr. Finley really showed me how to be independent, and I'll always appreciate that."

Simms - Fuck you Daddy!

The suddenness of Finley's death has obscured questions related to his reason's for being on the Ferguson's property. Speculation has been wild, and centered around the rumored visit Finley was planning on paying to hotly-recruited McGregor High School linebacker Hollis Ewing, whose family lives on property adjacent to the Ferguson's. The presence of a money bag with 150 pounds of silver bullion on the carcass of Finley has fueled the rumors.

Texas head coach Mack Brown had little to say about the situation, offering no comment at his only public appearance since the death of Finley.

The uproar has intensified the mini-celebrity of the Ferguson family, who received calls of congratulations from celebrities such as Dennis Francionne.

When told of the prominence of the kill, Ferguson expressed sympathy, but said he wasn't much of a University of Texas football fan. "It's in my blood to root against t.u., " he said. "We've moved the trailer all around this state, and I've made the kids go to all sorts of schools, but the one thing that's kept us together is our love of the Fightin' Texas Aggies."

You think about beer because you either drank a ton of it the night before and you can still smell the cigarettes and stale beer in head or you didn't drink and are thinking about what you will do that evening that will include beer. Since I am cheery this morning and have had about twelve pots of coffee I will give you my rundown on beer. It might seem like more a rant, but so what.

First off, I like every beer that was ever made. I don't care what kind of beer it is. If someone puts a cold one in my hand I will partake in the infamous beverage without any regards for what brand is on the label. It doesn't matter if I just met someone two minutes or ten years ago if they drink beer they are probably very similar to me in attitude. I will still take their free beer with great appreciation and likely pay them back in the near future.

Next, I think that this has been stated on the internet before, but for some reason I can keep a running total of how many beers my friends have given me and how many beers I owe them. Okay maybe not, but you know how the circle of beer works. Eventually you will get paid back for all of the beer that you have given out. You can count on it. I bet that when everyman dies his beer debt sits exactly at zero. It is one of the wonders of the world. At least it should be.

Beer snobs drive me up the freakin wall. I hate it when I am drinking a cold American light beer that is tantalizing and refreshing and some guy has to come up to me and call my beer weasel piss. He doesn't know if I just got done mowing the yard and want something light on the pallet. I don't care if you have tried four hundred and thirty four different beers throughout the world and I don't really need you to comment on what I am drinking. I am drinking what I have because I like that beer. I am not opposed to going with an occasional micro brew or something of the nature, but we all have our beer staples and we should not criticize others about the beer that they drink or what they put in their beer to drink it. I know that drinking a Coors Light Gato(over ice with lime and salt) seems a little feminine, but I am sure that person enjoys the hell out of their beer that way.

Given the beer snob comment I would like to say that any person who will only drink one kind of beer needs to liven up a little bit. Try something new and you just might like it. You wouldn't want to have sex in the same position for the rest of your life so go out and have yourself a different beer from time to time. Beer is pretty much right below sex on the greatness scale. Hell, even throw in a vodka tonic or something to change the pace a little bit.

Next time you are drinking your preferred beverage sit back and reflect on how wonderful a product beer is. Have a happy beer drinking summer.

Season Predictions for 2007 Football - Texas Tech

What better way for a fan of college football to pass the dead of off season than to throw out his predictions for the upcoming season? I figured I'd bring you predictions on how I think Tech will fare in the 2007 regular season in this edition of "Season Predictions," followed by predictions for all other Big XII teams, as well as teams of note, in upcoming editions. This edition will be special in that it contains two sets of predictions: a logical, look at the numbers prediction, and a Kool Aid prediction. So without further ado: Season Predictions for 2007 Football - Texas Tech.

The "If I Were a Betting Man" Prediction

at SMU - WIN - Red Raiders start their season at Ford Stadium in what may prove to be a tough game on the road. SMU ended the 2006 season with a loss to long time rival Rice, but still ended the season bowl eligible at 6-6. The Raiders have had trouble in the past getting the Air Raid kick-started in Dallas, and you can expect this to be much of the same, live on ESPN. However, expect a few balls to bounce Tech's way as well as a few breaks, proving to be enough for the win.

vs UTEP - WIN - No more Jordan Palmer, but you can still expect Mike Price to come to Lubbock with an effective game plan. There is a 5 way battle in El Paso for the starting position at QB, and it is probably one of the most heated battles in the country with 3 very capable starters in Sam Lorne (Florida State transfer who threw for a TD on an end around vs Tech in 2006), Kyle Wright, and Trevor Vittatoe, a very crisp and accurate passer. Expect one of the latter two get get the nod, with Lorne coming in for plays that require a mobile QB. However, Tech will have the edge in a hostile environment not seen in the rest of the Conference USA.

at Rice - WIN - Rice experienced a successful 2006 season by Owl standards, but expect there to be a return to mediocrity with a change in the coaching staff. Red Raiders should have the Air Raid clicking by now. This one could get ugly.

at Oklahoma State - LOSS - Okie Lite has made strides in the recruiting arena recently and expect it to start paying off for them in 2007. The Cowpokes have had Tech's number recently in Stillwater, costing the Red Raiders a shot at a BCS Bowl in 2005 with their only conference win that season.

vs Northwestern Louisiana - WIN - Tech gets to lick its wounds from the OSU game and get to trounce on the Demons. This one should be over by halftime, with the backups getting extended playing time in the second half.

vs Iowa State - WIN - Gene Chizik won't have the kind of talent at ISU that he did in Austin. You don't pick a winnable game for Homecoming for nothing.

vs Texas A&M - TOSSUP - If Stephen McGee somehow learns how to pass between now and then, it can make for a long day for the Raiders (as if it weren't already). The Aggies will control the clock with a methodical ground attack, so the Raiders will have to make efficient use of their time with the ball. This game has all the makings of another classic between the two teams, and there is a very strong chance that ESPN may exercise their option to air a Big XII Prime Time game that day should both teams come into the game with 1 loss or less. Right now, it's just too close to call, even considering the fact that the Aggies haven't won in Lubbock since 1993 (WOW! I was only 11 years old!).

at Missouri - LOSS - The last time the Red Raiders played at Mizzou, Michael Jordan was their Quarterback.

Sophomore quarterback Brad Smith did the damage for Missouri, using quarterback draws and counter keepers to run for 291 yards and five touchdowns.

[Texas Tech Defensive Coordinator Lyle] Setencich said he didn't think his players stopped trying. But they didn't get the job done either.

"It's like you try to guard Michael Jordan," Setencich said, comparing Smith to the NBA legend. "I don't imagine you can. I can't either."

Mobile QBs seem to have a number on Setencich coached defenses of late. This is going to be a long day for Tech as Mizzou QB Chase Daniel should flourish within the friendly turf of Faurot Field.

vs Colorado - WIN - A little payback is in order for the Red Raiders embarrassing loss to the Buffaloes in Boulder in 2006. Rest assured that the Raiders will not be caught overlooking a Colorado team that should be better this season than in their last campaign.

at Baylor - WIN - The globe-trotting Michael Machen (Kent State transfer) looks to be a real contender to Quarterback the Bears' aerial assault, although Black Szymanski, who ran the show after Shawn Bell went down with an injury in 2006, may have something to say about that. The Bears will still be a year away from seriously contending in the Big XII South, though.

at Texas - TOSSUP - UT's season will be contingent upon the health of the Offensive Line, which has had a rough offseason. A healthy Colt McCoy paired with a dangerous Jamal Charles in the backfield will prove unstoppable at times. The real question will be in the Defensive Backfield, which saw several players drafted by the NFL despite its low rankings as a unit the the Big XII. Should that unit struggle again this year, you can anticipate a repeat of the 2003 contest in Austin which saw BJ Symons throw all over the 'Horn defense en-route to a narrow loss. Texas Tech's kicking game has greatly improved since that game, so give Tech the edge should it come down to a last minute FG.

vs Oklahoma - LOSS - I'm tempted to change this to a TOSSUP, but that will all depend on the performance of the Sooner Offense during the course of the season. The Sooners lose All-Big XII Running Back Adrian Peterson to the NFL and will have a new Quarterback under center for the 4th time in as many years.

And now:

The "Kool-Aid" Prediction

You wouldn't be much of a college football fan if you didn't drink Kool Aid every once in a while!

at SMU - WIN
vs UTEP - WIN
at Rice - WIN
at OSU - WIN - What traditions do the Cowboys plan on stealing this year? Cowboys prove that throwing all the money in the world at a program doesn't equate to more wins.
vs Northwestern State - WIN
vs Iowa State - WIN
vs Texas A&M - WIN - Aggies haven't won in Lubbock in 14 years and it ain't gonna start this year. It's like a Bermuda Triangle for them. If this game is on ESPN Prime Time, it'll prove to the rest of the nation that Texas Tech football has passed A&M on by a long time ago.
at Missouri - TOSSUP - Maybe we can finally get a win in the state of Missouri.
vs Colorado - WIN
at Baylor - WIN
at UT - WIN - Graham Harrell throws all over UT's defense, setting the stage for a Big XII South Title match-up with OU.
vs OU - WIN - Jones AT&T Stadium is unwelcoming to the Land Thieves as they crack under pressure.
Big XII Title Game vs Nebraska - WIN - Welcome back to Texas, Huskers. Red Raider fans show up in droves, outnumbering Husker fans 2:1 as both shades of Red bleed in the stands. Bill Callahan's coaching staff won't have a solution to the Air Raid as Husker QB Sam Keller fails under pressure.

Josh Bard Gone Wild!

San Diego Union Tribune Friday June 1, 2007

Cameron led off the 11th with his fifth homer, a drive into the right-field seats off reliever Josh Sharpless (0-1), making his third appearance since being called up from the minors. Josh Bard followed two pitches later with another drive that appeared to reach the right-field seats for his second homer.

Bard took his home run trot and put his catching gear back on, only to have Joe West's umpiring crew reverse the call after Pirates manager Jim Tracy successfully argued the drive struck a thin metal railing above the right-field wall and did not leave the park.

The reversal changing it to a double caused Bard to race off the bench and start yelling at the umpires – a burst of anger similar to that by Kansas City's George Brett when he lost a 1983 homer against the Yankees when too much pine tar was detected on his bat. Bard chased the umpires from second base to first, getting ejected along the way by plate umpire Ed Rapuano, and Padres manager Bud Black also was ejected for arguing.

“The ball was clearly in play,” West said. “We signaled a little too quickly, but when we got together we all realized the right call wasn't a home run.”

After reviewing video tape, Bard and Black realized that, too.

“I ran around the bases, I thought it was a home run,” Bard said. “My intent wasn't to go out and go after anybody. But after looking at the video, they got the call right. I made a mistake.”

Video of Josh's Charge of the Light Brigade here at the "Worldwide Leader" errrr the Four Letter

So now Josh must sing "I'm sorry......so sorry" 50 times and hope that the league won't suspend him for bumping into the ump...good luck Josh, you're cooked.
