The Houston Comical reviews Tech Football

...poorly

Read it here - and think about what's missing...

"They (Filani and Johnson) were really good players, they really got in sync with Graham last year and had a really big year, but we feel good about these guys," Riley said. "We feel like they can do some things those other two couldn't.

Zing! Jarrett Hicks who? Riley not the Comical even mention him (hasn't he caught more TDs than any receiver at Tech? Just wondering aloud. He did win any Rotary awards for citizenship, but still...

Shannon Woods? Fighting for a starting job? Not interesting?

O-Line loses 4 starters?

BTW - I know that the print edition has a more detailed breakdown by unit - but the Comical has not made that available to the interweb masses - we haven't paid our 50 cents.

Watch your Raiduhs beat the Aggies....again

1982 - Tech @ The Tacklebox

Jerry Moore vs. Jackie Sherrill

Gabe Rivera versus the Aggie offense.

And I just realized that the guy in charge of the sound was making a side income dubbing porn tracks as well...I fully expected to see a cheerleader tryst in the locker room at the half. I must admit I was a little disappointed.

Ask an Aggie why they couldn't pack 'em in and sell it out, huh. I sure saw a lot of empty seats for a conference game.

Your grandma ain't that smart

From SI.com...

First my hopes were so high but then I had my e-feelings hurt a little bit tonight:(

I wondered aloud - is the Big 12 player mentioned below a Red Raider? Is he reading DiscoTech! brilliance? Is he forwarding the Disco site address to all his buddies?

And then I realized that I'm missing out on a small but important demographic - the student-athlete blog reader. Most of these guys aren't even reading my unbelievably intelligent musings!

It is clear though that athlete's grandmas are posting on Texags. That explains some, but not all, of the mystery.

8. Do you read message boards or blogs where fans discuss your team?

Yes: 39.5%
No: 60.5%

Notes: For the purposes of this survey, if a player answered "sometimes," it was counted as a "yes" response... Twenty-four players answered "yes" outright, while 23 answered "sometimes." ... Approximately 68 percent of BCS players responded "no," compared to approximately 51 percent of non-BCS players.

Quotable: "I read it if I want to have a good laugh," said one Big 12 player. "Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they're showing their opinions, but at the end of the day, they don't know what's going on." ... Most players who responded "no" said the people who write on message boards or blogs do not know what they're talking about. Said one MAC player: "My grandma could guess the same thing."

Chock full of lol

Hasta la Vista Team Discovery

Wow - so much news today that there's no way to cover it all and do it total justice. The waves from today will be far reaching. I'm going to provide you a list of links and you can read the stories for yourself. So go read and then we'll chat...in all cases but the last we thank VeloNews for being such a great place for cycling news.

1. Contador maintains his innocence in a prepared statement.
2. Team Discovery disbands - unable (unwilling?) to capture a new sponsor
3. Team Discovery/Tailwind Sports - why did they throw in the towel?
4. Hincapie to ride in Pink for T-Mobile (HT: spare cycles)

Wow - gotta have a sip of the Knob Creek before I press on...

So I think that story number 3 tells the tale. Bruyneel to retire. Lance back to the US mainland to continue to raise money and fight cancer. The impeccable track record of USPS/Discovery. And of course the bitter fight between the Tour and the UCI over doping enforcement.

It's a sad day for me to be sure...I grew up with this team. It's as if the Spurs were to just pack it in and say "You know, we've had a helluva run." Except that the NBA is a wealthy enterprise with amazing TV revenues.

So what do you say?

Let's go buy Contador's contract and start us a cycling team! We can't sign Big George he's already flown the coop...but let's give it a ride...

See you next year Conti...

FINALLY!

The Tennessean came through. Now I can put the gun away. And thank goodness, my arm was getting tired.

Daniel Loper v Kyle Vanden Bosch

Photo credits to George Walker IV of the Tennessean.

In other news, I watched the Indy @ Dallas game last night and came away impressed with my Pokes' performance. I was really keeping an eye on the aforementioned Keyunta Dawson. Looks like to me he played only about two defensive series and was truly disruptive to the Cowboys on two possessions that were in the Colts end of the field. I can't help but think he's going to do well in Indy.

Obviously, the Lions game was not on TV in Texas, so Lions fans are welcome to comment on Manny's performance.

You can't beat our meat...

Meat Science Academic Team Claims National Championship

Quiz bowl team clinches third national title in six years.

Written by Cory Chandler

Link to ttu.edu

There were no rings, no parades, no explosions of confetti, but Texas Tech University’s academic quiz bowl team recently rounded out a trio of national titles – proving that the San Antonio Spurs aren’t the only dynasty emerging out of Texas this summer.

The team won the 2007 national championship at the 60th annual Reciprocal Meats Conference, marking the third time in the bowl’s six-year history that Red Raiders have earned the title.

This year’s competition, held at South Dakota State University, featured more than 20 university teams from across the nation. Texas Tech defeated Angelo State University in the finals to take the top spot..

Participating schools can field two teams with up to three members each. Universities such as Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and the University of Nebraska send students to match wits.

Texas Tech team members included Landi Woolly, Travis O’Quinn, Matt Sellers, Meagan Mitchell, Travis Chapin and Austin Voyles.

Texas Tech teams also claimed the national title in 2005 and 2003. So while there may not be any commemorative T-shirts, perhaps a steak dinner is in order.

The comparison to the incomparable San Antonio Spurs might be the tiniest bit of a stretch don't ya think?

Couldn't help but to post this story fellas...back to our original programming...

UT has character!

So, I got this in an email today. Pretty good stuff. It wasn't credited, so if you know who did it...I dunno...tell 'em good job or something, especially on the logo in the center. The texture they added to the type is a real nice touch.

More notes on Key Dawson in Indy's camp

Here's what I think Colts fans...according to the now world-famous NYTimes Magazine article written by Michael Lewis, we know that a few NFL teams have become increasingly interested Texas Tech's game video and ask for a copy after every Tech game.

I don't think it would be too far a leap to suggest that the Indianapolis Colts are one of the teams requesting the video. After all, wouldn't one offensively minded team want to learn from another?

Is it any real shocker then, that Indy has more than a few Texas Tech kids running around the facility? I count Key Dawson, Dylan Gandy and free-agent rookie Gabe Hall. Not to mention former Raider and Colt Montae Reagor.

HT: Scout.com

Keyunta Dawson: Sure, he's a rookie and he's only 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. But Dawson is already impressing in camp as a disruptor whether he lines up at defensive end or defensive tackle. The Colts may not want him out there in short-yardage situations, but he could throw off the rhythm of running backs with his ability to shoot the gap, similar to the way Montae Reagor did the last couple of years, and that would allow others to swarm in for the tackle. As an added bonus, Dawson can put some terror into quarterbacks on passing downs.

Colts fans - I recommend watching the Tech vs. Minnesota Insight Bowl video on NFL.com for a taste of Texas Tech football - you won't be disappointed at the end, I promise.

Way to go Keyunta (we call him "Key") Dawson!

Catching up a (very) little bit w/ Manny Ramirez

Excited for Exhibition
With the first preseason game a day away, Detroitlions.com asked Lions’ players how they were feeling about getting out on the field to face a true opponent after two weeks of lining up against teammates in practice.

Detroitlions.com also spoke to some of the new faces around Allen Park about preparing for their first NFL game.

G Manny Ramirez: “You know, I’m really excited. We’re going to be getting a lot of reps so they can see what we’re capable of doing. It’s a different kind of situation, so I’m really excited about getting out there and going at it with Cincinnati. I feel prepared; I’ve had the veteran offensive linemen take me underneath their wings. They show me every little mistake that I make; they point it out to me and get on me about it. They just want to make sure that I get it correct, so that when it’s game time there won’t be any worries.”

I'm sure you'll be just fine Manny - hope to see you on the field soon...

Please, Dear God, not again...

I swear, if this guy does anything other than provide evidence that the press is FOS - then I think I might throw up...

Contador plans Friday announcement
Filed: August 8, 2007

Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has scheduled a press event this Friday in Spain, but says he will decline to answer reporters' questions after he reads a prepared statement.

Contador issued a release Wednesday notifying media of his plans to read a statement at the offices of Spain's national sports council - the Consejo Superior de Deportes - in Madrid.

Contador will be accompanied by Discovery Channel team director Johann Bruyneel.

Since winning the 2007 Tour de France, Contador has been the subject of heightened scrutiny regarding his possible involvement with Eufemio Fuentes, the Madrid doctor at the center of the Operación Puerto doping investigation.

I just can not imagine the damage this would cause to Discovery...and now I wonder if this is the reason for the delaying of the announcement of Discovery's replacement sponsor...

The appearance of Bruyneel at the presser makes me hope for good news - I can't imagine he would "stand by" a rider who will admit to involvement in doping...

Disco will have their fingers crossed for sure.

Not to wish ill on a teammate...

...But many a career has been launched because of an injury to a starter. Techsans certainly hope that Booger McFarlane's career is not in jeapordy, but we do hope that this can create an opening just small enough for Key Dawson to take advantage of...

IndyStar.com

Coach Tony Dungy confirmed Monday that McFarland damaged the patella tendon in one of his knees during a practice Friday and likely faces surgery.
"It's something where he's not going to be back in the next three, four weeks,'' Dungy said. "It's a long-term injury.''
That leaves the Colts with a huge hole to fill in the middle of their defensive line, and that only partly refers to McFarland's 300-pound frame. In eight seasons, he has appeared in 109 regular-season games, 95 as a starter. He started 15 games for the Colts last season, including the playoffs, after arriving in a trade with Tampa Bay.
With McFarland out, the Colts will move forward with Raheem Brock at one starting defensive tackle spot, and . . . well, someone else at the other.

The list of replacement candidates is long, but short on pedigree. Darrell Reid and Dan Klecko have appeared in a combined 62 games but share only four starts. Four of the other five prospects are rookies, including third-round draft pick Quinn Pitcock and seventh-rounder Keyunta Dawson, who has been moved inside after spending most of the offseason at end.

Best of luck Key...

Over-stickered cars!

Cabron Guey brings up an interesting subject with his UT Camaro pic. At what point does a person have "too much" school spirit? I say an alumni association sticker and logo are sufficient (mainly because that's what's on my car!). What say you, dear reader?
I've always said Aggies are the biggest violators, and the pic below, which was taken on a recent trip to the panhandle, confirms this. Could this be the truck of a well-known rp.com poster? Hmmm?

Windell Middlebrooks - Rising Star

Windell Middlebrooks had me laughing at the first Miller High Life commercial - but I couldn't believe my eyes tonight when I saw him on Entourage attempting to deliver E's desk and calling Johnny Drama a Smurf...

I don't think he's worried about being typecast as a delivery driver by the way.

OnMilwaukee.com delivers the background story on Windell who hails from Foat Worff.

Maybe TVTanline can come through again with another screen cap...

Cheers, Windell.

If there's a clock, a ball or a score - count me in...

This is an important time of the year for Bond J Bond.

You may not know me very well, and like any celebrity I may a bit of an enigma.

So let me tell you this one thing...I love sport.

I love the feel of a basketball as I shoot it over the fingers of a defender from three land...I love the feel of a September morning in the parking lot of "The Jones" and the smell of the barbeques as they crank it up on Saturday morning...I love cheering for Arsenal, a team I've only seen on TV - and wonder why most of America can't see the beauty of soccer...The first baseball game I ever went to was at Wrigley Field, so I guess you could say I was pre-destined to love the smell of stale beer and infield grass forever...When the Cowboys play on Sunday I can hardly sit down for longer than 10 minutes at a time because I'm just too nervous, to see me during the playoffs or a Super Bowl where the Pokes are involved might make you pull your hair out...I went to the very first game of the very first NBA Finals the Spurs were ever in and the crowd was so loud I learned what it means to be so loud "you can't hear yourself think" and it was awesome...I wish like crazy that I had spent more time at Dan Law field when I was in school...I think people are crazy when they say they don't like hockey - more than likely they haven't been to a game - and I still think hockey players are the best athletes. I'll never forget going to my first Stras game in Dallas and nearly crapping my pants when the crowd screamed "Stars" during the Star Spangled Banner...There's no better feeling in the world than when I'm on the green in two on my home course's number 13...And I love the Tour de France thanks to Lance Armstrong - and I still do even after he's gone on to other things - I find it so amusing when US sports fans complain about doping cyclists as it was only a few years ago they were packing stadiums to marvel at Bonds, Sosa and McGuire...I watch golf tournaments even when Tiger's not in the field and root for "Lefty" because he's the anti-Tiger...I wish like crazy that there would be an effort to consolidate boxing belts because more Saturday nights should feature title belt fights than mean something...

In general I'm just not that interested in sports where judging is involved. Maybe it's my type A personality that requires a winner and a loser. The idea that someone else would decide a winner and not a clock or a score just has no appeal to me.

And I didn't even mention half-a-dozen "Olympic" sports that I'll watch for a while every four years.

The FA Community Shield was played today which means the EPL season starts next weekend. NFL training camps are in full swing and the Hall of Fame game gave us a few minutes of a tease. My Cubbies are fighting for a playoff spot and October is right around the corner. There's only one more major to be played and I'm thinking Tiger's feeling the pressure and doesn't want to be "Oh-fer-the-majors" this year. And even though the NBA is in its off-season, the schedule was just released, and we learned that Greg Oden gets to watch another banner raised into the rafters at AT&T Center...have fun, kid.

Not enough Red Raider related topics for you?

What the hell do you think this blog is for? Improving my marriage?

When a Teeshirt Fan Takes it Too Far

Help a Raider out...

Just found this in my "inbox" - sorry about the delay in posting it...

Hello
I'm a regular reader of your blog, and a Tech student. I was asked if I'd create a podcast at Tech that covered Tech Sports and other sports. I'm looking for another student at Tech with a great knowledge of Tech sports and sports in general to do the podcast with me. If you, or any Tech student you know who is currently in Lubbock is interested in this, email me back. I would like to get it started before fall semester.

Give us a shout if you're game to help him out - e-mail the blog and I'll hook you up.

The e-mail has nothing to do whatsoever with this video...I've had quite a bit of whiskey tonite so you should remember that before you get on my case...

The inaugural ride of the Masked Rider....

This is what it'll look like...
