5 Fingers and 5 toes

Our nervous delivery of the 2007 season went as well as can be expected and all of our digits are accounted for. I think Harrell's ankle will be fine, but I think all of Raider Nation breathed a big sigh of relief to see Taylor Potts throw so well and lead a couple of drives. We are indeed in fine hands.

High fives all around and all that but we beat a sub-par SMU team and will have UTEP on a short week. I'm expecting the Jones to be rocking since we never expected to get pushed into OT like we did last year. I'm quite sure the team will be geared up to show the home crowd that they don't have any plans for a repeat of that affair.

Big praise to our new O-Line coach and to the boys up front who played remarkably well in my humble opinion.

Good grief though, the penalties sure seem to be here again. Grrrr.

Lots of time to discuss UTEP this week - we'll unleash a few bombshell posts on the Miners this week to be sure - so stick around and enjoy the first win of the season.

No TV on Saturday BTW - but the game will be available on XM Radio via their new Big 12 contract to air certain games throughout the season. Which means the party will be in my driveway on Saturday night - I'm sure the neighbors are gonna be pleased.

EDIT: Oh yeah - and the overs on Crabtree TD's as I mentioned before - that was a decent bet I would say...

For you Jerry Moore fans

Now that Jerry Moore is a bit of a cult hero - I posted last month the one video that is on YouTube that features a Tech team coached by Jerry...

http://ramblingraiders.blogspot.com/2007/08/watch-your-raiduhs-beat-aggiesagain.html

Oddly enough, that game versus the Aggies is the 1982 game - and Jerry Moore's time at Texas Tech would be up just a few years later...and the Texas A&M game probably figured into the end of "Moore Excitement" at Texas Tech.

The fall of 1985 was the end of "Moore Excitement.'' Tech lost a game to Texas A&M when Jerry Moore couldn't make up his mind whether to go for a tie or go for two - and so wound up going for two, futilely, from the 8-yard line. Over the next few weeks, James Hamrick from Rice and Brandy Brownlee from SMU kicked long field goals right at the end of close games, grinding Tech's season - and Moore's fate - into dust.

article by Don Williams

You want to know something else especially creepy about that Don Williams article?

It was written on September 1, 2006.

One year to the day before this:

Weird.

It's Game Day in Dallas

I struggled with the title of today's post.

The alternate version was going to be:

"I love ESPN/I hate ESPN"

But I'm not going to be in a bad mood today, so I opted for the positive version.

SMU Gameday Prediction = we win, SMU loses.

The spirit of Jerry Moore will be with the Red Raiders today as they create "Moore Excitement" under Coach Mike Leach. I'll be taking the overs on Crabtree TDs and wonder when we'll get to see Taylor Potts...

This does not mean that I won't scream at the kids today for doing something silly...but I well primed for this game and hope y'all have a safe one out there.

Wreck 'em.

Appalachian State is Hot Hot Hot

Coach Jerry Moore really is creating "Moore Excitement" today - even though his attempt at Moore Excitement was an abject failure while he was at Tech.

Jerry Moore on Wiki

We Tech fans just love it that he has turned around his coaching career at App State and are always pulling for him. That's the last two straight Div I-AA titles at App State in case you were wondering.

And if he makes the folks at The M Zone attempt to throw Lloyd Carr under a train, hey, that's their business.

If the team from the school that created that horrible video beats mighty Michigan at The Big House - well that's just embarrassing.

App State up 31-20 with a little over 8 mins remaining in the third - go Mountaineers - I hope you guys don't go Cold Cold Cold.

EDIT - Appalachian State has pulled off a monumental upset - holding on and winning the game - in fact - coming from BEHIND TO WIN.

The debate is raging on about whether this is the biggest upset of all time - and Mark May who is an industrial sized douchebag has called for Michigan to fall completely out of the top 25....

Whatever - congrats Jerry Moore...

AP - No Div I-AA team (and we all learned today that they are no longer called Div I-AA - they are now dubbed Champion Sub-Division) has EVER beaten an AP ranked team (much less a top 5 ranked team).

Wow.

Just wow.

I like my TV guide like I like my women

Easy...

You can have your helmets and your Excel spreadsheets...I'll take Techaroo's advice (he's a longtime Raiderpower.com forum poster) and stick with the simple approach.

Passive Aggessor's Texas Tech Predictions

Well I think its Time for me to make my predictions for the Texas Tech Football Season.

I have done my research this summer- aka I drank a lot of beer and this:

Here are My Predictions:

09/03 at SMU WIN

Tech will score Often and Early. The Hero will be the Short Yardage Punter who pinned the SMU Mustangs inside their own 10 on all of Texas Tech's Second Half Drives as Coach Leach didnt want SMU coach Phil Bennett to accuse him of running up the score this year.

09/08 UTEP WIN

UTEP will be without Jordan Palmer Plus this game is In Lubbock No contest..

09/15 at Rice WIN

The only thing good happening on the Field for Rice will be whatever funny thing the MOB does.

09/22 at Oklahoma St WIN

T Boone Pickens will have a heartattack as Raider Red kicks the Creepy Cowboy mascots ass all over the place.

09/29 N'west St WIN

Directional Schools from Louisana do not play Tech well- I wouldnt bring my non-existant kids to this slaughter it might scar them for life.

10/06 Iowa St WIN

The Cyclones will still have ghey uniforms no matter which one you vote on below and it wont help them in this game.

10/13 #25 Texas A&M WIN

We own the Aggies especially in Lubbock. Fran better start packing his bags.

10/20 at Missouri WIN

Missouri's hasn't shown me anything since Truman was in office.

10/27 Colorado WIN

Dan Hawkins might be a good coach but his players are wimps and his team is still going to suck. Plus there is payback from last year

11/03 at Baylor WIN

The Teddy Bears will allow the Raider's 3rd stringers to be Big 12 Players of the Week

11/10 at #4 Texas WIN

Coach Buttertooth wont be saved by Roy Williams, Chance Mock, Vince Young or Keith Toogood- Raiders win big in Austin.

11/17 #8 Oklahoma WIN

Its in Lubbock- the Raiders will be pissed from letting last years game slip through their fingers and take care of Mobilehoma U.

At the End of the Year you will be seeing this for realz

Tom Lemming looks bored

I've never seen these videos before - and so we need to send out over the intertubals a big DiscoTech! thanks to TechStrong...

We've linked TechStrong to the right and hope you keep up with him...

Lemming shows up in Lubbock to see Coach Leach.

Lemming beginning to fade as he's seen video equipment once or twice before.

Lemming witnesses Coach Leach walking on water.

Great stuff. If you happen to see the full program on a CSTV program listing, let us know will ya?

What are the odds?

Sorry I've been gone for so long....family can become more important than this blog every once in awhile...

So we're only a few days away from kickoff in Dallas and I feel like I need to be sure that you are aware of the obvious...

The game will be on Labor Day - which is Monday, September the 3rd. The game will be aired on ESPN and ESPN HD (I don't have my hopes up for 1080i BTW) at 3:00 PM Central.

ESPN will once again have a crack squad calling the game - Dave LaMont on PBP and James Hasty on color. Hasty was a NFL CB for a number of years - I can't recall a single game that he's called so I'll be interested to see how he pronounces "Alex Trlica." Thankfully we don't have Cory Hodges on the team anymore - I mean that is SUCH a crazy name... *wink*

Dave Lamont - again - I did a Google Image Search for you and if this is you:

Dude, I have no idea who you are...but Wiki says you were the guy who drew the shortest of all straws:

-Dave Lamont and Terry Bowden were used for weekends when ABC had more games than usual.

Whoa. Terry Bowden duty? What did you do? Take pictures of Lauren? Okay, now I get it.

Onward...

Tech opened as a 9.5 point favorite on the road. And the line hasn't wavered too much, only being bought up to an 8.5 point advantage...

But I don't bet on my alma mater. *wink*

Wanna see all the lines? Link to the Lakes of Hell

Other games of note in my book:

Colorado home hosts to Colorado State... State is a 2.5 point dog in this one. If you have never watched this game, IMO it is the zaniest in-state rivalry game. These game always seem to go down to the wire, or with amazing comebacks. In the first week when so many teams are playing the Montana State's of the world - this will be a real live Duracell-fest. And if you're brave enough, I wouldn't lay the 2.5 and I would sack up and take State.

UConn @ Duke? Listen, if this were a rematch of a certain NCAA BBall Final I would definitely watch. But it's so not that.

Todd Dodge has a rude welcome to NCAA Football on Saturday as he takes his Mean Green to Norman. Dear Baby Jesus, please let the Mean Green survive.

Tennessee goes to Berkeley. OMG. Didn't they make a TV show that was similar?

NoCal and SoCal aren't that much different are they? *wink*

I'll always take Tennessee in any "big game" matchup against Cal. Call it a Holiday Bowl Bias.

finally - a Tech preview I can get my head around

This one I've never seen - but this Scipio Tex dude is as funny as I am.....okay....he's funnier.

But you remember who brought you to the show baby!

Baby?

Barking Carnival Texas Tech Preview (put your soda down, you're going to want a clean monitor.)

HT to TVTanLine for providing the link to these guys and for the .gif of Johnny giving that (Modest?) mouse the business.

9 Days to Kickoff and Big News for DT! blog

(HT to Seth of DoubleTNation for reminding me about this picture)

DiscoTech! has negotiated a contract with one of the best in the business to be a contributor for the duration of the 2007 Football campaign.

While he will toil in anonymity and yet be paid handsomely...he is the creator of one of the icons of Texas Tech Football. He is the man who singlehandedly re-shaped the way we think about our football team and our season...

How's the buildup? Any good? Annoying as hell?

One last thing before we stun you.

When you think of the stock market, what's the first thing that pops into your head?

No, not having to work 5 more years because you were so sure that penny stock was really going to be bought by Microsoft. Not that.

The Dow Jones?

The S& P 500?

Nasdaq?

As volatile as any of these...

We present the Cambonie Football Confidence Index!

You're going to need to click on the 2006 version above to see it in it's total glory.

Listen, we know that after the Colorado game none of us wanted to live. We have however, committed that we will keep this going all year long...and if we don't...well...it won't be the first or last time we've lied to you.

So keep an eye out for it. It will return. We've just signed the contract today so we'll be working on the whip cracking soon.

10 Days to go

The 1942 La Ventana provides plenty of yearning for the days of the leather helmet.

(you can click on and save if you like - the original image is much larger)

Unfortunately, no information was provided about the location of this particular game or those pictured although the fellow in the Cowboy hat must be the head man, Coach Dell Morgan. This, his first season after coming to Tech from Rice was culminated by a Sun Bowl appearance.

Tech finished with a 9 - 2 record with (winning all their home games BTW) wins against Abilene Christian, Centenary, New Mexico U., Creighton, St. Louis U., Hardin-Simmon* U., Oklahoma A&M, Loyola (played at Soldier Field) and Wake Forest. Losses came to the Miami Hurricanes (0-6) and Tulsa (0-6).

We were fierce in 1942, baby. Fierce.

*I swear that I typed this just as it appears in the annual.

11 Days to Kickoff

This game film is especially memorable to me because it was the first time I had ever seen Tech play football on TV. I was blown away. Duke was coached by the great Steve Spurrier and at the time I thought for sure I would end up at Duke for my college years.

My future may not have gone exactly as planned, but that night damned near everything worked out for Tech Football.

And you can NOT watch this video and not wonder aloud "Man, James Gray was a stud."

7 months later Bond J Bond would be born

...these old game highlights are fun to watch.

And I hope that you're getting that feeling I am - this Saturday smelled like college football - except there wasn't any...still 13 days to kickoff in Dallas.

Pay close attention the first minute - the cheerleaders in their outfits just crack me up...

The Houston Comical reviews Tech Football

...poorly

Read it here - and think about what's missing...

"They (Filani and Johnson) were really good players, they really got in sync with Graham last year and had a really big year, but we feel good about these guys," Riley said. "We feel like they can do some things those other two couldn't.

Zing! Jarrett Hicks who? Riley not the Comical even mention him (hasn't he caught more TDs than any receiver at Tech? Just wondering aloud. He did win any Rotary awards for citizenship, but still...

Shannon Woods? Fighting for a starting job? Not interesting?

O-Line loses 4 starters?

BTW - I know that the print edition has a more detailed breakdown by unit - but the Comical has not made that available to the interweb masses - we haven't paid our 50 cents.

Watch your Raiduhs beat the Aggies....again

1982 - Tech @ The Tacklebox

Jerry Moore vs. Jackie Sherrill

Gabe Rivera versus the Aggie offense.

And I just realized that the guy in charge of the sound was making a side income dubbing porn tracks as well...I fully expected to see a cheerleader tryst in the locker room at the half. I must admit I was a little disappointed.

Ask an Aggie why they couldn't pack 'em in and sell it out, huh. I sure saw a lot of empty seats for a conference game.

More notes on Key Dawson in Indy's camp

Here's what I think Colts fans...according to the now world-famous NYTimes Magazine article written by Michael Lewis, we know that a few NFL teams have become increasingly interested Texas Tech's game video and ask for a copy after every Tech game.

I don't think it would be too far a leap to suggest that the Indianapolis Colts are one of the teams requesting the video. After all, wouldn't one offensively minded team want to learn from another?

Is it any real shocker then, that Indy has more than a few Texas Tech kids running around the facility? I count Key Dawson, Dylan Gandy and free-agent rookie Gabe Hall. Not to mention former Raider and Colt Montae Reagor.

HT: Scout.com

Keyunta Dawson: Sure, he's a rookie and he's only 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. But Dawson is already impressing in camp as a disruptor whether he lines up at defensive end or defensive tackle. The Colts may not want him out there in short-yardage situations, but he could throw off the rhythm of running backs with his ability to shoot the gap, similar to the way Montae Reagor did the last couple of years, and that would allow others to swarm in for the tackle. As an added bonus, Dawson can put some terror into quarterbacks on passing downs.

Colts fans - I recommend watching the Tech vs. Minnesota Insight Bowl video on NFL.com for a taste of Texas Tech football - you won't be disappointed at the end, I promise.

Way to go Keyunta (we call him "Key") Dawson!
